“Prize Patrol” Makes Surprise Visits to Navasota ISD

Navasota Texas, December 10, 2007 – The Brazos Valley Reporter made his way down HWY 6 this morning for a “secret” event in Navasota! It was cold, rainy and foggy, but members of the Navasota ISD Education Foundation and the media boarded a “yellow dog” this morning with enough warmth in their hearts to melt away any foul weather! We set out on a mission to visit four Navasota Schools to announce the recipients of the Grants to Teachers Awards and make surprise presentations “Prize Patrol” style! We’re talking 4 foot checks, music on the boom box, dancing down the halls, flowers for the recipients, and some very surprised and appreciative teachers and students! As I've told you in every article about Navasota, this town KNOWS how to have FUN! The way they handled this made it so meaningful and memorable! Mayor Bert Miller told us “the Navasota ISD Education Foundation was started in 2003 with a primary purpose to raise funds for innovative teaching grants to our teachers on all of our campuses. Since 2003 we’ve given over $150,000 back to our schools. The program allows teachers to do things that are not in their budget and not the standard curriculum. It makes it fun for the kids. It’s a partnership between the city, the schools, and other entities around town working together."

The prize patrol approach has been used since the inception of the program. An annual fundraiser dinner features celebrity speakers like Chuck Norris who donate their time to help the Foundation.
