City of Bryan Economic Enhancements Creates Opportunities for Collaboration with Habitat for Humanity
WHAT: The City of Bryan, Texas is continuing its effort to create an economic and vibrant downtown. The City is doing that by progressing into Phase III of the Downtown Master Plan by acquiring certain critical unimproved and improved properties in downtown for redevelopment and developmental purposes.
Most recently, the City has entered into an agreement to purchase several properties from Habitat for Humanity. The first is a block of property at 501 N. Main Street in Downtown Bryan. Currently Habitat uses the warehouse that sits on that block.
The City has also agreed to purchase two vacant lots two blocks north of the warehouse property. Once the sale is completed Habitat will continue to use the warehouse until a new facility is ready. They have agreed with the City on a $10 per month lease that expires January 31, 2009.
“We were very glad to work with the City of Bryan on this deal,” said Kelly Parker, President of the Board of Directors for Habitat for Humanity. “I think it was a win-win situation for both Habitat and the City of Bryan.”
This most recent agreement is the City’s second major Downtown purchase this month. At the beginning of March, Bryan purchased all the Twin City Mission-owned property located on blocks 105 and 123 of downtown.
Both purchases have the potential to be retail, commercial or residential opportunities for Downtown Bryan. Mayor Mark Conlee is excited about the opportunities associated with the property. Mayor Conlee commented that, “By acquiring Downtown property, the City is placed in an even greater position to continue to implement the Downtown Master Plan. Our ultimate goal is to re-create a Downtown that is a hub of business activity, residential living, and a destination for citizens, students, and visitors.”
