What's it Like in Calvert?

A few thoughts and pictures by the Brazos Valley Reporter

This seemingly quiet little town about 25-30 minutes north of Bryan College Station on Highway 6 is often passed through quickly as we trek north and south on 6. Calvert's Main Street and HWY 6 are one in the same. If you're looking for the hustle and bustle of the big city, go elsewhere as you won't find it here....thankfully! We all need a break from that! But, this quaint little Texas town is brimming with heritage and historical buildings, homes and shops, each with fascinating stories and people. Some have continued their tradition for years. Others have come to Calvert in search of opportunities and a better life, and have made that a reality. Stop the car and walk the streets and you're in for a treat as a new world unfolds with all the discoveries you will make in Calvert. Is it unique? Yes, it is! Calvert has a personality that is all its own. Many times I have passed through Calvert late at night and thought most of those on the road with me may think this little town is asleep for the night. Are they? Or are they just taking a breather and planning the next great day in Calvert for people like us to come and enjoy?

So, what is it really like in Calvert? To be honest, you just have to experience it for yourself, and the upcoming Calvert Showcase 2009 is a great way to start.....or continue, if you're already a fan of Calvert. I will tell you that whether you live in the Brazos Valley or are just planning a visit, Calvert is an experience just waiting for you to enjoy.

For a little "preview", let's start out with someone who is one of the most interesting people I've met, none other than Gracia Casey Thibodeaux, known to many as "Cajun." I met Cajun several years ago just as LifeintheBrazos.com was getting off the ground. Owner of "Cajun's Shoppe" on Main Street, full of antiques and other unique and unexpected items, Cajun is herself a "story" to be told. Gracia has spent more than three decades in journalism in the Brazos Valley. She writes about everyday events and problems and gives a new perspective and a humorous twist to her work. Her articles have been translated into more than 100 languages worldwide and she has been bylined in almost every major newspaper in the United States. We publish her column "by Cajun" at LifeintheBrazos.com where you'll find such articles as "A Copper Experience", "New Ways to Be Buried", and "My First Calf." She also writes another column for us, "Cowgirls of the Brazos", where you will find articles such as "That Cowboy is a Cowgirl." But wait, there's more.....after all those years, she is NOT slowing down....she's just getting started! Now she's writing Western Romance Novels.....and, yes, they are about the Brazos Valley. She published her first book, The Rising Star about a year ago. Her second book, Song of the Brazos is now out and running. A dedicated horsewoman as well, her horse and long time friend, A-Mar, is about to turn 35!
